ゾシマ長老の謎めいたお辞儀

Chapter 1

尊敬を集めるゾシマ長老の庵に、カラマーゾフ家の父と息子たちが集まります。金と、一人の女をめぐる醜い争いを解決するためでした。しかし、父フョードルは、その場に着くなり、下劣な冗談と挑発を繰り返し、長男ドミートリーの激しい気性に火をつけます。怒号が飛び交い、息子が父を脅す、救いようのない光景。その混沌のさなか、すべての罵声が、ぴたりと止まります。

I always feel when I meet people that I am lower than all, and that they all take me for a buffoon. So I say, ‘Let me really play the buffoon. Father Zossima moved towards Dmitri and reaching him sank on his knees before him. Alyosha thought that he had fallen from weakness, but this was not so. The elder distinctly and deliberately bowed down at Dmitri’s feet till his forehead touched the floor.

Dmitri threw up both hands and suddenly clutched the old man by the two tufts of hair that remained on his temples, tugged at them, and flung him with a crash on the floor. He kicked him two or three times with his heel in the face. The old man moaned shrilly.
